CRISPR thoughts and more from the Festival of Genomics in San Francisco

Posted by Anoop Grewal on Nov 19, 2015 10:00:00 AM

Thanks to CRISPR, we are now entering a new era of genome engineering. Not that long ago, I spent a couple of years as part of my graduate thesis work engineering a mouse with a gene altered so that it would not make any insulin-like growth factor binding protein 6 (IGFBP6). In fact, my fellow graduate students in the lab and a post-doc were each assigned to knock out a different member of the IGFBP family in order to understand the role this family of proteins played in growth, development, endocrinology, and more. Now, studies that had been considered too labor-intensive to run are possible with genome engineering techniques that can achieve a throughput, time-to-result and precision that were previously unattainable. Today, with CRISPR, a single graduate student may be assigned to the task of knocking out a whole set of genes in order to create each null. It was no surprise that Genome Editing was a popular track to attend at the Festival of Genomics conference which took place in the San Francisco Bay Area early this month.

A Great Start for the Festival of Genomics

Posted by Anoop Grewal on Jul 6, 2015 9:00:00 AM

Richard Lumb, Founder and CEO of FrontLine Genomics, inaugurated the first Festival of Genomics conference two weeks ago in Boston by articulating his company’s vision to bring genomics to the masses sooner. He and his team sought to offer a lineup of speakers and events to do their part to advance the field. I, for one, enjoyed partaking in a conference that is not only among the most focused in genomics, but also one that has sought to add an element of fun as you may have guessed from the ‘Festival’ in the conference name.
